What is the size of your rolls of sod?

For easy handling, our sod is cut into rolls of 8sf. Our standard sod rolls are 24"x 48". The sod height is approximately 2" thick.1 " of blade and - " of root base.

How many square feet of turf per pallet?

There are 480 square feet (sf) per pallet.

May I order any amount of sod?

The minimum order for delivery is 480sf. If you place a 'farm pick-up' order, your order can be as small as one roll, which is 8sf.

Is your sod available at any retail locations?

When is the best time to install sod?

Sod can be laid year-round as long as the ground is not frozen or has snow on it.

What preparation do I need to do before delivery of sod?

How long can I wait after the sod is delivered to install it?

Sod is a perishable product and MUST be installed the day of delivery.

Will sod grow in the shade?

Our sod requires a minimum of five (5) hours of direct sunlight. Less sunlight or dappled sunlight will gradually cause the sod to become sparse.

What is the best way to remove an existing lawn?

Prior to the installation of new sod, any existing lawn should be chemically killed and removed. Apply an herbicide, such as Round Up or similar product, to the entire lawn. Read and follow all label instructions. Apply a second application about two weeks after the first application. This will catch those areas missed and generally insure a complete kill of turf and weeds. When the turf is completely brown and dead, the old lawn can be easily removed with a sod cutter. Be sure to cut thin, removing the dead vegetation, not a thick layer of soil. Clear the ground of remaining debris.

Is there a specific way to lay the sod?

No, laying the sod vertically or horizontally won't make a difference. You will only see the seams for a short while. Then it will all blend together.

How do I prevent fungus?

Keep the fertility rate up. Keep fertilizing on a regular basis to keep your lawn healthy. Fungus generally attacks unhealthy lawn.

What type of fertilizer should I be putting on for the winter?

Use of a slow-release winterizing fertilizer is suggested or you can apply a 16-16-16 fertilizer. Follow the rate indicated by the manufacturer. We recommend winter fertilizing in November.

How often should I fertilize my new turf?

Your lawn should be fertilized every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season of February to November.

How can I tell if my lawn gets enough water?

The best way to determine whether your lawn is receiving enough water is to probe the soil to see how moist or dry it is. Take a screwdriver and push it into the soil in several places. If you are able to push it in at least 6 inches, then your soil is properly soaked. If you can only force the screwdriver a few inches below the soil surface, it means that the soil is not moist enough, so increase your watering time. Do not allow the turf to become dry as this will cause it to shrink. One inch per week is sufficient. If the weather is very hot and dry, more water will be needed.

Why should I avoid watering my lawn in the late evening?

Under warm weather conditions, watering in late evening allows the lawn to stay damp all night, creating a perfect environment for fungus, blights and other diseases.

What can I do with the mushrooms in my lawn?

Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungi, many of which are involved in the breakdown process of dead and decaying organic matter in the soil. In this sense then, they are beneficial and do not harm your living plants. Mushrooms often pop up during the moister and cooler periods of the year. There are no chemical controls to deal with them in your yard. Rake them up and destroy them before they have a chance to develop reproductive spores. Mushroom spores are in the air, so when the conditions becomes just right, the spores find a home in a healthy yard.

How can I lessen the damage from urine spots on my lawn?

Saturate the areas with water. This allows the excess nitrogen to be diluted and leached into the soil, reducing the concentration in the area. It is usually best to treat the areas within 4 hours after urination. A 30 second soaking with a hose will work fine in most cases.

Why are perennial ryegrasses better for this area?

  • Perennial ryegrass thrives in the cool and moist climate of the Northwest. Remaining lush and green year-round.
  • Perennial ryegrass is the most disease resistant of grasses in the Northwest.
  • Ryegrasses require only about half the fertilizer and maintenance of bluegrasses.
  • Ryegrasses do not develop thatch readily
  • Perennial ryegrasses are the most durable of cool season grasses
  • Perennial ryegrass has a dense, fine texture, rich green color and accepts low moving if properly maintained.

What type of grass is JB sod?

JB sod is a 3-way blend of perennial ryegrasses that are recommended for the Northwest of the U.S. West of the Cascades. It is a versatile, all-purpose grass that outperforms in the cool, damp Northwest Pacific climate. It produces a fine, dense turf that is very resistant to wear.

Can I put turf over my existing lawn?

NO! All the problems of the existing lawn, like weeds, diseases, soil compactness, etc. will be transferred from the old lawn to the new sod and will have the very same effect on your new sod. In addition, the roots of the new sod will not be able to penetrate the old lawn and grow into the soil. When going about a new lawn, it is very important prepare the ground correctly, loosen and oxygenate the soil, so that you will have a good soil base for your new lawn for many years.
