Controlling Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua)

Controlling Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) in lawns can be a real challenge here in the PNW.

Annual Bluegrass is known for being extremely prolific and adaptable. 

With a its bright green color and consistent flowering- it can look very different than your desirable turfgrass and really stand out in your lawn.

Here are a few tips below to help you control this tenacious weed grass-

• Keep your lawn density up with regular over-seeding and fertilizer applications. This will help your lawn be more competitive- removing available space for Annual Bluegrass to establish.

• Be careful not to water excessively. Poa annua is a shallow rooting grass and thrives in moist soils. Excessive water will also increase the germination process creating more weeds...

• Apply Herbicides labeled for Annual Bluegrass control. Pre-emergent herbicides can be especially helpful in taking a pro-active approach. 

• Scouting and Manual removal of newly sprouting grass weeds like Poa annua can go a long way in preventing the sread.

• Clean equipment- Annual Bluegrass and other weeds are often spread by mowers and other equipment that have been used on other sites. Be sure the equipment being used on your lawn has been cleaned properly and isn't transfering weed seed and/or other potential issues.​​​​​​​

While there is no 'silver bullet' for eradication or control of Poa annua- these steps above will go a long way in helping manage this grass weed- while at the same time helping you keep your JB lawn looking great!
